posting this for a friend of mine, he recently got computer with windows 7 64 bit and ati graphics card and most q2 clients doesn't seem to work (q2pro, r1q2, aprq2)

R1Q2 encountered an unhandled exception and has terminated. If you are able to
reproduce this crash, please submit the crash report to r1ch.net when prompted or
post this file and the crash dump .dmp file (if available) on the R1Q2 forums at
http://www.r1ch.net/forum/index.php?board=8.0

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST VERSIONS OF R1Q2/R1GL/ETC!

This crash appears to have occured in the 'c:\aq2\ref_soft.dll' module.
It is very likely that the software renderer (ref_soft) is at fault. Software
rendering in Q2 has always been unreliable. If possible, please use OpenGL to avoid
crashes. Consider using the modified ref_soft.dll available on the r1ch.net forums to
fix some small bugs if you are not using it already.

No need to post this when it explains the problem right here:

Quote
This crash appears to have occured in the 'c:\aq2\ref_soft.dll' module.
It is very likely that the software renderer (ref_soft) is at fault. Software
rendering in Q2 has always been unreliable. If possible, please use OpenGL to avoid
crashes. Consider using the modified ref_soft.dll available on the r1ch.net forums to
fix some small bugs if you are not using it already.

Does he not have a 3D video card?

I,v not been able  to get any drivers after 10.4 to work with q1 q2 q3 and a few other older openGL games  ,It  Just crashes on loading

ATI support blames the game code itself , It cant handle  the extra OpenGL 4.0  extensions

R1GL should be able to handle the large extension string just fine. Make sure you're starting with R1GL and not ref_gl.

How exactly do you start with r1gl and not ref-gl?  I've been getting the exact same error, and I've been unable to solve by using the "set vid_ref r1gl" that you made mention of on the R1GL portion of the site.  I'm sure there's some way to load the game up with it never trying ref_gl, but I'm afraid I need exact steps.

"r1q2.exe +set vid_ref r1gl" from the command line..
or you can try renaming ref_r1gl.dll to ref_gl.dll
